When the Walls Began to Answer

By early February of 1977, the small terraced house on Green Street in Enfield had already exhausted the patience of disbelief. What began weeks earlier as unexplained knocks and shifting furniture had escalated into something far more intrusive. The home was cold, crowded, and ordinary, which only made what followed harder to explain away.

On or around ~February 3, activity surged again. Loud banging sounds echoed through the walls without a visible source, furniture slid across floors without hands to push it, and objects were reportedly thrown from rooms where no one stood. The disturbances did not confine themselves to night. They occurred in daylight, in front of multiple witnesses, eroding the comfort that darkness alone was to blame.

Police officers responding to calls that winter would later state they observed unusual behavior firsthand. One officer described a heavy chair lifting and sliding across the floor. Others noted knocks that responded when called out, as if something unseen was listening and choosing when to reply. The house became a focal point, drawing journalists, researchers, and skeptics who expected exaggeration and instead found disorder.

Most unsettling were the reports involving a young girl at the center of the activity. Witnesses described her voice changing in tone and cadence during certain episodes, speaking with a harshness that did not resemble her own. While accusations of trickery surfaced almost immediately, the scale and persistence of the phenomena, witnessed by professionals accustomed to scrutiny, complicated any simple explanation.

The Enfield case refused to resolve neatly. It lingered through the winter months, leaving behind recordings, photographs, sworn statements, and a house that seemed to push back against being observed.
